Increasing Transformer Efficiency & DC Induction Motors

  • Delivered Talk on “Magnetic measurements on electrical steel strips using standard Epstein frame IEC 60402-2″ held in Nov. 2013 at SCOPE complex Lodhi Road.
  • Industrial Support for Magnetic Materials, Measurements and Power Loss in Electrical Steel used as core material for Transformer Power Losses measurements: A special effort in 2015 was initiated by Dr. Kotnala by addressing experts from CPRI, Bangalore, CEA, Nippon Steel, ABB & Indian Transformer Manufacturer Association. A detailed study addressed how recycled electrical steel is harmful to use in transformers, which resulted in an increase in the customs duty on recycled electrical steel. 
  • Energy from the Distribution Transformer can be saved in two ways: (i) Understanding Ageing Effects in Transformer Core and, (ii) Not to use Recycle Core material in the Transformer.
  • A small increase in efficiency, say 0.5% of the distribution transformers in India would result in an annual saving of 4 to 5 Billion KWh together with reduced carbon emission (CO2) of 4 M Tonnes per year. 
  • Evaluation of remedial measures for a plant producing amorphous foils of electrical steel to reduce noise levels generation when used as a transformer core M/S Vijay Electricals Ltd. (~ 5000 crore turnover) Hyderabad (June 2014).
  • Industrial Support for Magnetic Materials & Electrical Steel: More than 92 industries are being catered for their quality system based on ISO:17025. Industrial consultancy service rendered to nine big industrial houses & PSUs for solving magnetic materials & measurements associated with complex problems of industries. His lab has been internationally recognized for 10 magnetic measurement parameters in the preview of ISO:17025 of the International Bureau of Weights & Measure, (BIPM) France.
  • International Standard Test Epstein frame IEC 60402-2 was established in India in 1998 for magnetic measurements on electrical steel strips.
  • Published research paper on electrical steel with international comparison: RK Kotnala, P.C. Kothari, Magnetic measurements on electrical steel strips using standard Epstein frames. Indian Journal of Pure & Applied Physics; 38(11), 797, 2000.
  • In 2005 Dr. Kotnala was honored as a member of the CBIR Board for 6 years.
